Fictional Lover of the Week; John Thornton, day 1

I was so happy when I woke up today because I knew that it will be my first day with the fictional date of the week, Mr John Thornton.
I bet that for most of us he is familiar, but I decided that maybe it is wise to put some basic information about him to this first post so he becomes a little familiar also for the readers who do not know about him.

MR. JOHN THORNTON from North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
-The owner of the largest cotton mill
Marlborough Mills in the industrial town called Milton in Northern England during the 1850's.
-When Mr Hale, a vicar, moves from South to the North with his wife and daughter Margaret, Mr Thornton becomes a student of Mr Hale
-First Thornton seems like an unlikely hero, he is a stern and unsympat
hetic industrialist.
-His struggle with his workers and with his own growing feelin
gs for Margaret reveal a different, a lot gentler side of him
-Thornton is the man with the money but he seems very lonely until he falls in love with Margaret
-First Margaret dislikes Mr Thornton BIG TIME because she only sees the industrial side of him, but as the story develops she understands that there is a other sid
e of Mr Thornton, a side he does not show to everyone

I bet that everyone who has read North&South or seen the BBC adaptation of it understands why I love Mr Thornton so much. Someway he reminds me of Mr Darcy, at least a little. They both are proud and "cold" at fi
rst but then when they meet a woman and fall in love they start to show a softer side.

The BBC adaptation, made in 2004, is one of my favorite BBC adaptations. It tells about the Northern English society at 1850's but it is also a lovestory. And I don't mind watching gorgeous Richard Armitage as Mr Thornton for like 4 hours.

Tomorrow I will post some of my favorite Mr Thornton quotes and maybe some videos from Youtube.

So what do you think about Mr Thornton? Have you seen the BBC adaptation of North and South or read the book?

  1. I LOVE that BBC adaptation; I saw it for 1st time this year & I've now watched it 4 times! lol Last weekend, I made my mom watch it and she loved it too. :) And yes, Thorton is a great date!

I have the book from the library now, and plan to read it in the next week or two. Can't wait!

  2. I'm embarrassed to say that I have not actually read this book. But if there's a character in it that reminds you of Mr. Darcy, I think it's high time I read North & South!

  3. The BBC adaptation of North and South is fantastic! I guess noone could make it better! The cast ist great Armitage is the perfect Thorton!
I've also read the book which I liked, I'd just like a little bit more romance. The end I had to read twice to understand what there is written :)
Also I just don't get why North and South isn't translated! There is just the Endlish version!

Will you do the fictional lvoer of the week every week now?
I could give you list list with candidates ;)

  5. I saw North and South in Tv this fall, here in Finland, not all the series, though, so I was a bit disappointed. Couldn't undestand why Margaret didn't like Mr Thornton. For my great joy I found the dvd in a netshop cdon.com. Richard Armitage is gorgeus and a really good actor! I first came to know him in The Vicar of Dibley there he played the lovely Harry Kennedy.
